This is just going to be a random first blog because I'm a boring person. Not really, but I can be boring if I have nothing to really talk about so as my first blog I shall talk about my dog Oscar and the top things you must know about him. Here we go... are you ready?
.) Oscar was going to be originally named Yoda when I first got him. Why you ask? Because he was very tiny at the time and his little ears were almost bigger than his face at one point. Since then he's grown into his ears and I noticed his body was long like a Dachshund (Weiner dog). Why did I decide to change his name from Yoda to Oscar? Well, Yoda just didn't settle with me, and I couldn't imagine yelling for a "Yoda" when he decided to escape out the door like Houdini. I ran threw names, and kept coming back to Oscar. I'm glad I picked it cause it totally fits his body description for a hot dog wise and he just looks like one to me. And yes I do consider his middle name as Meyer LOL. It's stupid to give dogs a middle name, but by golly it's his name and he understands it very well.
.) We were told at the time we adopted him he was a Mini Fox Terrier. I believed it at first, but as time went on, I knew the previous owner was a big fat LIAR! For months I had speculated he was not that breed. I searched online for the breed we were told he was and to my surprise, his paws were much bigger than the ones that I seen in pictures. Their coats were not tri-color as his and they were mainly all white with a few patches of black here and there. Oscar on the other is tri-colored and has some white on his chest, toes, and on the tip of his snout. I found a breed called Chiweenie (Chihuahua Weiner Dog, Mexican Hot Dog). I seen a few pictures and kept coming back to them. Then one awesome day there was a loose Chihuahua dog running around my Mom and Dad's back yard and Oscar played with him as if he'd known him forever. The thing about Oscar is he's not that easy going with new dogs. In fact he's a bit intimidated by them until he gets to know them really well. My parents dog "our family dog" Nanook he actually growled at her when he was just a wee-tiny pup and once he got used to her, they were best friends for life and they LOVE to play even now. But back to my point. The dog that was running around that day had the SAME traits as Oscar. Curly cute tail, jaw line, face, except the ears his are floppy, and also the feet. So, I concluded my research and went with Chiweenie because he acts too much like a Chihuahua and Dachshund. He even burrows under the blankets at night as they would.
.) My dog can be pretty rotten when he wants to be and he likes cats only and if they have no claws in the front. He will go as far as getting the cat to play with him and he'll nudge it and tease it until, it smacks him in the face. If it's an outdoor kitty he'll bark and want to chase it, but if kitty from outside has claws in the front and he gets smacked or attacked he'll take off crying into the house. Here is a funny little story for you. Back in the summer a stray Mama cat had her babies in the neighbors bushes by the drive way. Some of the babies liked people and some did not. Well, Oscar got a little too close when I took one of the babies back and Oscar was put on the ground by Mama cat and Oscar fled for his life doing that scared puppy cry ALL THE WAY INTO THE HOUSE! Not once did this happen, but twice. The second time he just stood there and Mama cat's eyes got really big. She moved just the tiniest bit and Oscar ran whaling into the house yet again.
And with all that being said, he loves to pick out a chocolate treat from the litter box LOL. Oscar loves kitty turds and it is gross, he'll sometimes pick one out and roll on it. Why? That's something I have yet to find out.
.) He barks at his own reflection. Weather it be in a mirror, the tv or the glass on the door, he'll bark at it. His fur from the back of his neck all the way to his tail will go up in a straight line. He's very weird sometimes, but I get to laugh when he does it.
.) Oscar loves to play with his skinny. What is a skinny? It's a toy for dogs that has no stuffing in it, and usually is sold with plastic bottles in it. Which by the way, he LOVES to play with plastic pop bottles too. He will toss his skinny up in the air and it'll go flying all the way across the other side of the room and he'll fetch it and toss it up in the air some more until he's tired. He also likes to do this with his ball. It's a very small tennis ball that fits in his mouth cause the regular sized are just too big.
.) Oscar is a big burrower when it comes to bed time. He has to be under the blankets. When it's bed time I'll get under the covers and get comfortable and here he comes walking from the foot of the bed to me and he'll take his little cold wet nose and try and lift up the blankets so he can get under too. So I lift the blankets for him and say do you want to burrow? And then he does and while he's getting under he throws his head up to push blankets out of his way until he finds his spot and flops down and curls up. He's the perfect foot warmer and he doesn't mind having cold toes against his back. If he gets too hot, he gets out of his little spot and gets on top of the blankets, flops down, and spreads out. Some mornings I'll wake up sharing a pillow with him. And sometimes if he's tired and I'm in the other room, he'll put his paws up on me to say lets go to bed. He'll stay there until he realizes I'm not ready yet, so he'll make his way to the bedroom and where will I find him? curled up asleep. He's got the neatest personality I swear.
.) Words Oscar understands. Just like a toddler would understand little and simple words so does Oscar. His first words he learned VERY quickly was "bye-bye". Anytime I say you want to go bye-bye he'll get really excited and jump like he's on a pogo stick. Sometimes I tell him I should of named him jumper cause he LOVES to jump.. that will be the next thing about him. Another word he understands is "stay". This is the newest one that he's still learning, but he's a smart boy and he'll eventually know it by heart. "Burrow" is another one as mentioned above for bedtime. Here's a few words put together that he knows very well, "Do you have to go potty" or "Do you want to go outside"? You ask him that he RUNS to you and waits to be put on the outside chain to potty. No he's not allowed to go outside without a leash or a tie out because he will wonder off with his little nose to the ground. I have tried the no leash thing, but he's much to dangerous because he's likes to chase after vehicles and he's been lucky not to be hit, so the no leash training had to come to an end and he had to be tied up when it comes to potty time or walking. He's an indoor dog so he's free to roam the house and run and trust me this house is plenty big enough for him to run in.
.) As mentioned above he's a jumper. Anyone I've ever known has always hated it when a dog jumps up on them cause their excited to see someone they know. I was one of them people, but with Oscar just not so much anymore. Only thing I do hate about him jumping is when it annoys people and yes, I must admit I need to break this habit. Sometimes when he jumps at me he pushes me forward cause in his way it's saying, "Hey, I'm really glad to see you, I really have missed you!" So that's why it doesn't bother me when he jumps on me. He may be a little dog, but boy when you say jump and he asks how high? He can jump above a door knob when he's really at it. LOL. He's just a little ball of energy. Imagine a dog on speed and caffeine and that's the perfect image of Oscar jumping!
.) Oscar is unique, rotten, cute and just LOVES attention and can be quite jealous, but he's only jealous when it comes to attention. You start petting Nanook or say her name he's right there with her trying to get his loving in too. When me and my husband are laying in bed at night on his days off he will come up between us and lay in the middle or jump on one of us for kisses. Sometimes if he's pushed away I pick up on his emotions as strange as it seems, I can. I would be what you call an Empath. A person who can pick up on people's feelings, emotions and moods. I have NEVER in my life picked it up on an animal before until I got Oscar and I think it's because he's attached to me and I'm attached to him. So just like I would pick up a human's emotions I can pick up on his. Sometimes if someone pushes him away because they don't feel like petting, or playing with him I get this overwhelming emotion to cry, so that leads me to believe that dogs do cry just like a human.
.) Mine and Oscar's bedroom is a basement bedroom so naturally there is stairs. He will wait for me at the top to go down with him, and usually he'll just run on down now if we are coming up I'll be in front and he's behind me or sometimes beside me or in front. He will wait for me to take a couple stairs before walking up. I know this is just a random first blog about Oscar, but it's just so cute. When he goes down sometimes he'll take a couple of stairs stand there and look up at me and I say go ahead and he'll take a couple more look at me and of course I tell him to go ahead until we are down.
.) He will open a door if he can push them open. My bedroom door has to stay locked at night because if it's not he'll stand on his hind legs and push the door open with his front paws. When we lived in a trailer back in the summer the screen door had to be latched or he'd push it open to get out. Of course coming back in he moved his paw to pull it forwards and he'd get back in. He's a crafty little dog and sometimes I wonder if he was human at one point because he's smart.
.) Oscar loves to chew shoes, get a hold of socks and underwear if they are dropped on the floor, and also other things he's not allowed to have. If he gets a sock and he KNOWS he's not allowed to have it and you go to grab it away from him, he will take off running with it. There has been many times when I have had to chase him around the dining room table in circles to get a sock away from him. I think he does it because he thinks it's either funny or that you are playing with him. The dog has a sense of humor I swear. If it's something he is allowed to have and you get it to throw it for him oh, he's fine to let you take it. Just like playing ball he'll bring it close to where you are lay down and chew on it, but if you say let me have it he'll leave it and wait till you drop it to go after it. You go to take a sock away from him, nope it's come and chase him time or until he drops it and walks away.
.) Another reason why he is a really neat dog/friend is that when you talk to him he will stand there still, drop his tail and just listen to you like he understands everything you just said. If you cry he will come up to you in your lap and lick your tears. He's got the biggest heart for such a little dog. There have been many occasions when I have cried and he was there each time to lick my face and let me hold on to him.
.) Oscar isn't suppose to have table scraps, but there are a few things I will allow him to have and these are the reasons why. He loves pizza crust. Every time I have pizza I usually try and give him one or two, and sometimes I don't give him any. The crust is all that I will ever give him because I know it's not going to upset his stomach and crunchy stuff will help keep his teeth in good condition. That is one reason why he gets dry dog food only. On an occasion he'll get a can of some good ol' Gravy Train mixed in it, but he eats much better on the dry stuff. I will give him steak or pork chop fat because fats are good for him and the fat will also keep his fur shiny and healthy, so if you have a dog that's not allowed to have table scraps go ahead and give them some meat fat, it won't hurt them it'll just make their coat look really nice. Another thing we will give him which is a very rare occasion is Croutons. He just likes really crunchy stuff. My husband dropped one once and of course Oscar ate it and it was only a certain one he would eat, but I figured yeah he can have a few cause those are also crunchy and will clean his teeth. Now this next one will probably make you think WOW he eats that? Well, here it is, Oscar also likes veggies. I know there has to be other dogs in the world that does this, but I never knew a dog that did until Oscar. Yes, he likes carrots, green beans and raw broccoli, and of course corn, and he LOVES red potatoes! If I have some veggies left over I will allow him to have it because veggie of course are good for you and just like a human a dog should have it in their diet too. I don't hardly ever see much veggies in dog food and if I do it's the extremely expensive kind that would be gone in two days max. So I choose to get him good old dry kibble. He at one point loved the Purina dog chow, but has since turned his nose up at it and likes to steal his best friend Nanooks food. And too like a human I will feed him 3 times a day. Dogs are animals and just because they ARE dogs does not mean they shouldn't have 3 square meals. I find it very cruel when some people only give their dogs 1 meal each day at the same time. I try and keep Oscar on the same kind of feeding schedule as myself because it's easier and it keeps him happy and he doesn't go hungry.
.) Oscar is a Mommy's boy. Yes I realize he's a dog and not a small child but, just like a small child he needs me to care for him, see that he eats and of course play and go out to potty. I think of Oscar as one of my children because of all of the above and two cause I have no children yet. Some people find it really dumb to treat them like a child, but dogs are no different, except they have floppy or standing ears, fur and 4 legs and of course a tail. Why is Oscar a Mommy's boy? Because if he is left at home and of course he's always watched when I'm out, my Mom usually keeps an eye on him cause I of course trust my Mom and I know he's in great hands, anyways she has told me before when I have left he will follow his nose exactly where I have walked. I am rarely alone he's my little shadow and he goes EVERYWHERE I go in the house, yes even in the bathroom. When I shower he's usually upstairs or waits for me.
Okay so there is 15 random facts about my dog Oscar. He's one of the neatest, loving, fuzzy creature I have ever known and he is my best friend for life. As the saying goes dog is man's best friend and that is definitely true. Oscar is my son in many ways like a small child and he's also one of the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet. He may be afraid of strangers and hide behind me, but he wouldn't hurt anyone. If you're walking down the side walk and he happen to get loose he'd hop like a little rabbit (no joke) and just bark at you to play. I'm glad God drove me to Oscar. The day I got him I was going to look at another dog, but got lost and wrote down the number of the lady who had him instead of the ladies number I was going to lol. So it was our destiny to be together. I love my little Oscar Meyer Weiner!
